Godwin Battery, East Yorkshire
This WWI gun battery has fallen into the sea, the result of some serious coastal erosion. Even just standing there you can see the cliffs crumbling before your eyes. These photos show Al (Highy) who showed us around.

Fort Godwin was a coastal battery built to defend the ports along the Humber estuary. It opened in 1915 and was constructed for two 9.2-inch guns. The battery was in use throughout WW1 and modified during the WW2. In 1940 it was equipped with a 4-inch gun and a new pair of searchlights.

It’s made up of some massive chunks of concrete so no wonder it has fallen off those soft looking cliffs.
You do find some jolly interesting stuff on your travels!
It was an amazing sight to see …I wasnt expecting to see it so was quite suprised ! A cracking day out !
I like the reflections in the second pic Ian.
I guess it will just be left to break up in the sea.

Good day out though, some gorgeous light there, even with that good looking dude in your shots it’s hard to convey the scale of these concrete lumps.

I remember it before it fell off (and I’m not that old).
Fascinating stuff, and always nice to see nature doing its best to undo man’s hard work.
Really like the second shot, really emphasises the scale. Plus great colour and a reflection is always a winner!

Quite a contrast between this and the pieces on the south coast – much of which is still in place … at least the fixtures and fittings are

Well composed picture from interesting location. But I have to say I like the second shot more, the blue sky reflection in the wet sand is superb, and the picture shows the scale well too.
Both photos are great, for different reasons – I love the way you’ve composed the first one, and the colours and reflections are beautiful in the second :~}
