just months "after" the crash — does that mean he survived or is this a misprint?

My bro-in-law and I went to an airshow to see one of these planes fly. Awesome machines, I can see how the pilot may have survived a crash – they’re built like tanks!!
The word "hero" is used far to often for such trivial things these days, in this case I think it would be justified although the men themselves would deny any such thing, such is their type!

Shot down over France, imprisoned in the British Compound at Stalag Luft III, but unlike Steve McQueen, 2 Lt Harris managed to escape!
