Between 1944 and 1948, 11 Allied airmen were killed when their aircraft crashed on this hill.
Half a mile north of this viewpoint (across the left shoulder of the hill), an RAF Volunteer Reserve pilot survived a crash in his De Havilland Chipmunk Tmk.10 WB579. Lost in low cloud and unaware of his altitude, the fixed wheels of the Chipmunk struck the ground at Arnfield Moor, flipping it onto its back.
Having finally clambered out, the pilot managed to make his way to a nearby farm, covered head to toe in wet black peat.
