RAF P51-C Mustang SR 411 on Darwen Moor, Lancashire, England.

‹ Return to

Looking towards Bury, Holcombe Hill in the distance.

Flown by Polish airman Herbert Noga on 29 July 1945, it appeared Noga was unaware of his height in the low cloud as his Mustang hit the moor at cruising speed.

The last mission of the war (probably) for this P51-C Mustang was to support a bombing raid on Hitler’s Bavarian pad at Berchtesgaden on April 25 1945 – 240 Mustangs escorting 359 Lancaster bombers. Hard to imagine such a force bearing down on such a small place.

    Great find and shot

nobody grabbed the remains? hmm weird.

nevertheless nice find. and nice composition too, it would have been more bad ass if it was a bit overcast to give it more of a creepy look to it, as if it just happened.

You’ve captured the feeling of the moor here Ian. The strands in the foreground and the hills on the horizon make this special

Just been on the Lait and Allenby sites. Am amazed that there are so many crash sites across Lancashire and Yorkshire. They are everywhere.

Nice image and story. With the weather you had there, it’s hard to imagine how very different it can be in bad weather !

Came across this site in the mid 1990s by chance – may have a look see one day in 2012 – may fit it in with a walk on the moors and a look at the new top on Darwen Tower.

First found this crash site by chance in the mid 1990s when up on the moors on a new typechine, know as a ‘mountain bike’ . May go take a look again in 2012 – plus Darwen Tower has a new top on now {as of 13.01.2012} so worth a look. The proposed Darwen Wind farm is not far from this crash site.

Didn’t know about either of those things! While researching this site, I found something from a proposed water board project where the planners had taken account of the site and were careful not to disturb it. Wonder about the windfarm, how close that will be to it.

A mile or so to the North I’d guess from the info on the news about it i.e towards the Tower. nice link here to tower dome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV_vw-kP1do&feature=related
