English Electric Lightning XS904
Have uploaded this one in its own right. I was going to make this the lead shot but thought it was too dark but people seem to like it more than the others…
Edited this version a bit, have cloned out the chock handle in front of the starboard wheel.
I like this shot Ian..I like that dark side..
Superb shot. Saw one of these whilst at ATC summer camp RAF Leeming in the 1970’s doing the stand on it’s tail thing and rocket up at an unbelievable speed until out of sight. Stood there staring like an idiot. Cost me a bawling out by the drill Corporal as we were on parade at the time but it was so worth it just to see it, brilliant 😀
Yeah, I really like this one mate, does need that L button to appreciate in all it’s magnificence!
Man – these are good Ian! Will have to make the effort next time but it’s a bloody long way for an evening shoot! Reading [http://www.flickr.com/photos/greycopse] description takes me back to a similar event……ATC Summer camp at Coltishall 1968 when it was home to the Lightning Conversion Unit – No.226 OCU, various Lightning Squadrons and the Saudi Training Flight with four T.55’s (one of which now resides at MAM at Coventry.
Apart from various gawpings from the apron, being tasked with polishing one in the hangar, inspecting one whose brakes had failed, languishing in the hangar corner after being extracted from said hangar side, taxying out in the back of a Chipmunk while all sorts were going on, USAF F-100’s, RF-4C’s from Alconbury and a Voodoo doing airfield attacks and fly-thrus’ ……but then being tasked with scaling a ‘blast wall’ down by the threshold while various Lightnings taxied past, Pilot’s waving and then burnt off vertically into the ether. Christ I’ve got goose bumps typing this!!!!!!

i’m glad you uploaded it in it’s own right, it’s a great shot – the lighting, is like dark and light side of the moon kind of stuff. wonderfully split centrally, with that portside tyre necessary to show balance / level to the shot. pretty cool shooting Ian.
Like this, reminds me of some of my JJ shots from East Kirkby. looks very menacing in the dark!

Thanks for sharing those memories guys. I have never seen one airborne. But people who have always talk about the noise and of how they stand on their tails and rocket out of sight. I have missed out and am just sick with envy.

Superb. I think it looks great – if a bit menacing! Brings back memories too – years ago, we used to hear and see these (and Phantoms) almost everyday taking off from nearby RAF Leuchars.

The part silhouette and silver light make the interest here Ian – having said that I understand your comments. There are several of my shot that I skip over and then when I post one, it seems to have more appeal that the ones I prefer … must be me!
