Avro Shackleton WR960
Lancaster bombers, Vulcan bombers and Shackletons like this one at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester were built at Chadderton near Oldham.
The Chadderton site, which had produced aircraft since 1939, closed last week after the government cancelled the Nimrod and Harrier contracts.
Last Christmas, Chadderton’s sister plant at Woodford closed after more than 85 years of aircraft production. About three quarters of the staff will be offered positions at another plant.

I’ve never seen one of these aircraft, I will have to travel up to the museum one day.
Such a shame we’re loosing all the country’s heritage due to this and previous goverment balls ups!

Thats very sad. I remember Woodford summer airshows in the early 1980’s. They were brilliant. I remember the first time I saw an airbus at one.

All of the 8 Sqn fleet were named as Magic Roundabout characters – how cool was that!?
The 8 Sqn Shacks were named after characters from both the Magic Roundabout and The Herbs.

A real shame all these places are closing with the risk of job losses – the whole country seems to have become a "service industry" ( an oxymoron if ever there was ! ) – god knows where it will end ??
I well remember Woodford airshows during the 70`s & 80`s including the Lancaster, Mosquito and particularly the Lightning, brilliant stuff !!
Bummer about the closures. Great shot though. I can’t even imagine how awesome 4 Griffons must sound.
Showing my age, but I can remember when the Shackletons were based at nearby RAF Lossiemouth and as a youngster I thought that they were Lancaster bombers! It was many a year before I realised what they were but it didn’t hurt to much as they still sounded and looked fantastic
*In fact, the more I think about it the more I can recall the various aircraft that have dissapeared from the RAF in my area over the years…Shackleton, Phantom (although not sure if it was based or had a temporary posting up here but remember it all the same), Sepecat Jaguar, Buccaneer and more recently the Nimrod. Happy days!*

I am very envious, wasn’t something we saw often. Occasionally when walking and climbing in North Wales we’d see Phantoms from RAF Valley, and once or twice we’d see them in the Cairngorms when up that way. But to see Shackletons flying overhead on a fairly regular basis must have been magic! I have never seen one in the air. : (
