Dakota G-AMYJ at the Yorkshire Air Museum. Visitors can climb on board and sit in the plastic seats along either side of the fuselage while listening to the recorded sounds of a parachute drop over Normandy in 1944.
The American C-47 Skytrain was called the Dakota by Commonwealth forces. It comes from an acronym from Douglas Aircraft Company Transport Aircraft.
A clip from the TV series Band of Brothers in which hundreds of C-47s carrying thousands of paratroopers fly over Normandy and into hellish flak on June 6th 1944.

looks like what we call a DC-3 .. they used to use them for crop dusting here back in the day – there is still the odd one around with the hopper in, as museum pieces.

Having seen the twisted remains of a Dakota propeller, it is interesting to see photos of the whole thing. I particularly like the composition of the final shot. Nice one, Ian.

The Dakota is one of those superbly iconic aircraft. I’m a big fan of Band of Brothers series and I have the audio book of Major Dick Winters memoirs.

one of the first planes i flew in ian went to the isle of man from manchester when geof duke was the champion over there on the island , great photo and story i think i was 8yrs old at the time and got off in the isle of man with pockets bulging with barley sugars the air stewardes took ashine to me i was the only youngun on the plane

You flew in a Dak and also in a de Havilland Dragon Rapide? You were getting airborne in some famous old planes from an early age Mick! Great memories!

The Dak is the best commercial transport ever made! I have been privalaged to fly in one that flew at Normandy it was still green inside, still had the mounting points for the cable the paratroopers clipped onto as shown in the Band of Brother clip… It still had the manufacturers work number plate on the bulkhead behind the flight deck… "Made by Douglas Aircraft Company at Long Beach California 1943" What an aeroplane… any picture of a DC3 C47 call em what you will….. is fabulous…. yours are amongst them Ian :-)))

Great light on the old girl, like she’s made of gold leaf or something! Really like the third shot too, great composition and cloudscape, real sense of setting out into the unknown skies ahead
Just seen that Dakota clip , recall it now from the series , great addition and puts into pictures the sound clip they played on the Dakota on Sunday .
