Liverpool Blitz, Then & Now
This is Sidney Road in Bootle where bombs fell on September 2 1940. Being close to the docks, Bootle got it bad.
I’ve had to clone in part of the roof on the right (it’s far from perfect), the original photo didn’t have that bit and there is now no continuation of the roof. Original image from Liverpool Picturebook (no longer available online as of 2023)

These really are the ‘Dogs Bo**ocks’ Ian ……. brilliant bit o’ferreting around and brings home what people suffered during that terrible time! Love the juxtaposition of the old and the modern cars in there – certainly makes you think!

Really well done. Can’t imagine the trauma of seeing your own house blown to bits like that – but so many people must have done so.
clever compilation – those bricks nicely placed around the VW! great image, sad to see how the building looks now, you’d think for chrissakes they’d rebuild to the original style!? nice to see you back about too, shame i missed you earlier.

Great photo work, I do a lot of the same kinds of images for the Merseyside blitz and this is one of the few locations I haven’t tried yet.
As an aside I think the wartime damage may be a different date though. Sidney Road was hit twice in the Blitz, on the night of the 31st August/1st September 1940 and the night of the 22nd/23rd December 1940. The earlier raid demolished or damaged houses between 70 and 74, but I think these are further down the road, 11-15 or thereabouts if memory serves. The houses on that end of Sidney Road look slightly different to those on the other side of Greenhalgh Road.
