Republic P-47C Thunderbolt 41-6246 on Aran Fawddwy
Flight Officer Peter Quinci USAAF was killed on 16th September 1944, when his P47C crashed into the cliffs of Aran Fawddwy in Wales while on a training flight from USAAF Station 342 at Atcham in Shropshire. It was 6 days before the missing plane was found and F/O Quinci’s remains were removed to RAF Llanbedr.

Another P47 Thunderbolt of the same Fighter Training Group at Atcham was killed in a crash a couple of weeks later on October 3rd 1944; the remains of 2nd Lt Quentin J Sella were never recovered from the crash site in Staffordshire;

Visited this site in 1978 recovered two .50 brownings and rudder. Also Beaufighter nearby and Whitley bomber.
I knew that many of Bomber Command’s losses (and therefore other’s) were on training missions but your work really brings it home.

very rugged bleak looking place, great for photography but can imagine it was pretty hard to find any wreckage
Good detail Ian – and for me, a wider shot looking back is useful. Looks like the light was fading on the last shot
That’s some crag ! Must of been hairy finding the wreckage.
